The United States Department of Energy announced new efficiency standards for commercial air conditioning units on 17 December 2015. Following on from the Paris Climate Accord, this announcement targets savings for American business users amounting to almost $170billion off utility bills over the lifetime of these new units, with carbon emissions cut by almost 900 million metric tons over the next 30 years. Where the United States leads in developments of this nature, the rest of the world will soon follow, so AirCentric are quite confident it will not be too long before the UK Government issue similar campaigns and awards for savings within the arena of commercial air conditioning in the United Kingdom.
When will air conditioning efficiency standards be fully integrated?
The new US efficiency standards will be phased in from the year 2018, with substantial savings on energy and carbon pollution required from this date forward. The most common commercial air con units in the States are the rooftop units found on typical low rise buildings, such as schools, diners and restaurants, warehousing and small office premises. These units cool around 50 percent of commercial spaces in the United States and campaign awards to businesses for refitting rooftop units with advanced controls or committing to completely new air conditioning installations are in place from 2016 onwards.
US Government working with Air Con manufacturers
The challenges to US air conditioning manufacturers is to have an even more historic background, following on from the creation of a partnership between the US Department of Energy and the Better Buildings Alliance in January 2011. The United States Government has been working with AC manufacturers since that date in attempts to build more efficient rooftop AC units, to meet high specification performance targets. Since the launch date five AC manufacturers have managed to meet the targets on rooftop AC units. Energy use of the new AC units is expected to reduce by up to 50 percent, dependent upon location and business use of facilities fitting these upgraded units. It is estimated that US businesses would save a total of $1billion each year in energy costs alone if they replaced existing rooftop units with these new 10-20 ton commercial AC units.
How will this affect UK air conditioning standards?
In the UK air conditioning installations have not been seen to have prime importance by smaller businesses and commercial premises, rising temperatures and recognition of climate change issues mean this situation is likely to change in future.
